I too have conflicted feelings about this song. On the one hand, the Bangles were the first band I ever saw live, in a real rock'n'roll venue. On the other, I live to love Simon and Garfunkel--I wrote every single paper in college (every last damn one of them) while listening to either Sounds of Silence or Bookends. But I have resolved the conflict, more or less, by pretending that they are two completely different songs. This only works until the end of the Bangles version, when I automatically start singing "Someone told me it's all happening at the zoo." I do believe it. I do believe it's true!
[And, just to date myself, I believe that this song (the B's version) was the last 45 that I ever bought. You know--those small, thin black things with grooves in them?]

I've bought 45s in the past year.
