Tube Steak: You Need to Think More About Roseanne

Be honest. You never think about Roseanne. This comedy or that comedy is better. Blah, blah, blah.

Pull your head out of your ass. Watch this episode to the end--all the way--and get your head straight. Recognize the greatness of John Goodman. I'm dead serious.

God help me, I agree. I sometimes stumble into an episode and I always kind of marvel at what a decent show it is. Or was. Whatever.

By the way, have you ever reviewed the Dicaprio version of Romeo and Juliet? I used the search function, but all that appeared was a reference to zombies. Which is cool in itself, but I'm looking for your input on the Dicaprio thing. As an R&J purist, (Today, in print, I declared the Zeffirelli version the greatest movie of all time) I haven't been able to bring myself to watch the adaptation with cop cars, Hawaiian shirts and hip hop.

LaFlamme,

Sorry for not responding sooner. I've not reviewed the Baz Luhrmann version. I went to it theatrically and at one point owned a VHS copy of it. I remember liking it, but that was a long time ago. I'm not sure how it would hold up, especially since it's the only Luhrmann flick I've liked at any point in time.

As for Roseanne, fucking right on.

I watched the Luhrmann version over the weekend. I just couldn't shut up about how much I hated it. It wasn't the modernization, it was the acting. Those on her periphery were pretty good -- Mercutio, Benvolio, even Tybalt (Leguizamo) had his charms. But Dicaprio as Romeo tended to simply spew his lines, as if memorizing them was enough. Danes was okay, I thought, but without an adequate Romeo, those key scenes were terrible. Dicaprio was only good, in my view, when he was screaming. He does that really well. And the ending! Luhrmann changed it in a very significant way and it seems to me that by doing so, he choked on it. That's when I really started to hate. But whatever. My wife thought it was decent and the reviews are generally quite good. Maybe I'm just one of those asshole purists. Heh. And now off to read Man on Film. I like the photos.
